Our review of the book helps us work with the author to put together a publication package that fits the author’s needs. We offer payment plan options for authors, with the balance coming due at the time of publication. Once the author has filled out the contracts and made a down payment we place the manuscript into the design queue. It can take 1 to 2 months to reach the design phase.
Authors are asked to submit a back cover description, author photo and biography, and they have the option to select a template and/or stock photos for the cover or allow the designers to use their own creative expertise.
If the author is using our professional editing services, we would begin the editing phase while the book is still in the design queue. All editing changes are subject to approval by the author.
Once the design process begins we create the interior and full-color cover of the book with the author’s input in the process. During the design process we send the author two sets of electronic proofs to look over. The first set of proofs (interior and exterior) is sent after the initial design work is done. The author will look the two proofs over and send the designer a list of changes in the prescribed format. The designer makes the author’s changes and sends him or her another set of proofs to approve, before the book is sent to the printers.
The design package includes 50 corrections for free during the proofing stage. Most authors do not incur any extra charges during the proofing and correction stage, but edited manuscripts tend to have far fewer corrections than un-edited manuscripts.
First 50 corrections are free with the design package
51 – 150 corrections – $0.50 per correction
151+ corrections – Hourly rate of $90.00 per hour
Beyond the first two sets of proofs included in the publication package, each additional proof is $30.00.
When the final proof has been accepted, we send the files to our digital printer and begin distributing the book through our bookstore website (www.inkwaterbooks.com). We also list the book on Amazon.com, Barnes&noble.com, Powells.com, as well as with Ingram and Baker & Taylor wholesalers, and with Bowker’s Books in Print.
The author receives royalties of 40% – 50% of net receipts on any sales through these distribution avenues. The majority of our books are made available through print-on-demand, but offset printing options are also available. Authors can purchase POD copies of their book at a 50% discount off the retail price.
