In the late 1940s, eleven-year-old Mary Margaret Kelly and her family inherit Pennwood, a Civil War-era mansion in Willitsville, Ohio. Margie grabs her faithful Tydee Dydee doll and the family moves from Michigan to Ohio.
During Willitsville's Fourth of July celebration, the Kelly family meets and later adopts an orphan named Abigail who, unfortunately, reeks of Vicks VapoRub.
When real estate developers want to acquire Pennwood, the girls decide they must find something historically significant to save their home. Intriguing artifacts and diary excerpts found in the attic give them their start, a Civil War survivor hints that Pennwood had been a stop on the Underground Railroad, and the adventure begins.
